Welcome to Salina, Kansas.
Founded: 1859, Pop: (2000) 53,597, Elev: 1225 feet. Salina is the Saline County Seat. Located at the I-70 and I-135 junction on the banks of the Smoky Hill River and near Kanopolis State Park & Reservoir. Salina is a rapidly growing city in the nation's heartland blending rural heritage and hospitality with urban America, making Salina an excellent place to live, study, work, and visit.
If urban center is a reflection of its region, then Saline County owes much to its cities. The communities of Brookville, Glendale, and Bavaria boast of unique qualities which enhance the Crossroads Region. Each shares a symbiotic relationship with the larger population center of Salina, a relationship which provides rewarding contacts, contracts, and entertainment. Follow the ribbon of Crawford Street, in Salina, to the west. Cross over the double lanes of I-35, and you will find the wandering curves of Highway 140.
The scenic road leads through the bottomland fields of the Saline River Valley, following the old railroad tracks along the flatlands.
In 1989, Salina was one of 10 cities to receive the All-America City Award given annually by the National Civic League. This award is given to cities who portray civic excellence through community participation, communication, involvement and leadership.

It is the marketing and shipping center for an area that produces grain, livestock, oil, and natural gas, and a hub of the hard-winter-wheat belt. The city has grain elevators, flour mills, foundries, and factories that make aircraft, industrial gases, houseboats, electronic devices, soft drinks, plastic and aluminum products, machinery, office supplies, and frozen foods.
Kansas Wesleyan Univ., a branch of Kansas State Univ., and a military school are there. Nearby are prehistoric Native American burial grounds.
Predictably, agriculture is the predominant industry in Salina, and its grain elevators are visible from miles away. This agrarian emphasis is even reflected in a local Catholic Church which is built in white cylindrical shapes intriguingly like grain silos. However, Salina has several other important employers. Surprisingly, the city has a strong manufacturing base. Having over over 2000 workers, Tony's Pizza is the largest single employer. Tony's makes makes consumer retail frozen pizzas as well as food intended for school cafeterias and other institutions. Additionally, over 500 are employed in factories for Philips Lighting, Exide Battery, Great Plains Manufacturing (farm equipment), and Raytheon Aircraft. The high ratio of factory experience in the labor pool and Kansas' right-to-work status make Salina an attractive location for factory operation.
The city has a local daily newspaper, The Salina Journal, several radio stations; 99.9FM KSKG (http://www.999kskg.com), 910AM KINA, 92.7FM KILS, 95.5FM KQNS, 93.7FM KYEZ, 1150AM KSAL and 104.9FM KZBZ, though no local television news.
In addition to a branch of Kansas State University (which is based in Manhattan, Kansas), Salina is the home of Kansas Wesleyan University, a private liberal arts college that affiliates itself with the United Methodist Church. Enrollment to each of these institutions is around 800 in Salina.
